ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Post Graduate Department of Applied Genetics was started in 2003 and hosted at the premises of Department of Botany, Karnatak University Dharwad with the aim of creating trained human resource in the various of fields of Genetics. In 2005, the department shifted to independent premises at old KIMS Building and relocated to present premises in 2009.

      Since its inception department is focused in training the human resource with excellence in various fields of genetics, which is evident by its alumni placement as permanent faculties in various institutions like, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, Karnatak University Dharwad, Austrian Center for Industrial Biotechnology, State Forensic Science Laboratory etc and other various science and technology institutes in various countries.

      Many of the alumni have proved themselves as successful entrepreneurs offering various genetic services. Apart from the alumni’s working in the field of genetics, many are working in the field of education, civil service, banking service, biotechnology industry etc. The department has received grants from various agencies such as, UGC, DST and VGST. As a result of department’s commitment towards human resource development and societal approaches, Government of Karnataka has sanctioned the grant to establish Research Centre for DNA Diagnosis in Department of Applied Genetics, which is later made autonomous as Karnataka Institute for DNA Research under department of Higher education, Government of Karnataka in 2012. In 2014, two faculties were appointed on permanent basis.

       Presently the department is working in the field of Molecular Medicine, Microbial Genetics, Development Genetics and Cytogenetics with special focus on health and Environment.
