ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Postgraduate Department of Studies in Marathi at Karnatak University, Dharwad and Department of Kannada Studies at Mumbai University, Mumbai were founded in 1949. The Department of Marathi has been discharging its responsibilities towards academic excellence in the study of Marathi Literature. The department is known as one of the best departments in Marathi outside Maharashtra state for its contribution to the field of Comparative Literature.  Realizing the importance of comparative study of languages and their literature, the governments of both Karnataka and Maharashtra have jointly established the Department of Marathi at Karnatak University and the Department of Kannada in Mumbai University.
