ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Karnatak University Dharwad was established by Bombay Legislature of the Erstwhile Bombay Presidency through the enactment of Karnatak University Act, 1949. The University became a Statutory University on 1st March 1950 having jurisdiction over this part of Karnataka.

The Post Graduate Department of Law was established in the year 1962 along with its sister institution the University Law College of Law as a result of the vision and initiative of Wrangler Dr.D.C. Pawate, the then Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University with a view to build a model institution which could in course of time be developed into a leading centre for advanced Legal Studies in North Karnataka. The Department has acquired name and fame as one of the best in the entire South India with the vision and hard work of Dr. D.C. Pavate, Prof. V.R. Bhat and Prof. Ajjappa and others.

 Later in the year 1962 the University built a separate campus for the University College of Law and P.G. Department of Studies in Law in the year November 1976.

The Department initially offered Two areas of Specialization, namely., (i) Mercantile Law; and (ii) Labour Law in the Two Years LL.M Full Time Course. The institution had a full time Chairman with 9 member’s qualified teaching faculty. The University College of Law as well as P.G. Department of Studies in Law were remained as a Single Unit with the Chairman of Department officiating as the Principal of University Law College since its beginning.

Presently the Department is running Two Years Full Time LL.M programme with two areas of Specialization, namely., (i) Constitution Law; and (ii) Corporate Law. Presently the Department is having 4 Full Time qualified faculty.
