ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Karnatak University, Dharwad introduced post graduate in botany as early as 1951 in Karnataka science college, Dharwad and shifted to an independent building in the year 1966 the department offered general courses in botany such as plant systematics cryptogamic botany mycology cell biology plant breeding and plant physiology subsequently several new papers have been introduced like microbiology, plant pathology, developmental biology biophysics, biostatistics and computer applications.

Credit Based Choice System has been introduced with an open elective paper at M.Sc II and IV semesters such as medicinal plants and biotechnology in the IV semester three core papers and one project have been introduced

A separate computer laboratory with internet facility for the benefit of staff and students and also separate instrumentation laboratory is developed with equipments like HPLC, PCR, gel documentation system, trinocular fluorescence microscope attached with camera, UV spectrophotometer deep freezer, cold room, orbital shaker, lyophilizer, fermenter, rotary microtome, Kjeldahl digestion and distillation system.

The members of the staff and research scholars of this department are actively engaged in the research in various fields like genetics, embryology, mycology, plant pathology, histo-chemistry, reproductive biology, plant tissue culture; environmental biology and phyto-diversity more than 800 research papers have been published in international and national journals.

In recognition of research activities of the department various research funding agencies have provided financial assistant to faculty members to presue the research activities, grants have been received from UGC. CSIR, ICAR< DOE, DBT, DST, MOEF and BRNS organization special assistance is also received form UGC for the thrust area such as cytogenetics, tissue culture, Biodiversity, phyto-diversity and conservation UGC has sanctioned 20 research fellowships to the research students to persue research the department is also participating in UPE focused areas programme and IPLS programme of UGC New Delhi and DBT New Delhi.
