ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Studies in Folklore was established in 1996 with the intention to carry out an advanced study and research in Folklore. It is the only independent Department of Folklore studies of its kind in Karnataka State. The aim of the Department is not only to educate the students but also to create awareness among the people about their traditional knowledge.  

The Department has a competent and efficient teaching faculty with good infrastructural facilities. Teachers are qualified with Doctoral degrees.

The study of folklore is basically multidisciplinary in its nature. The Department admits any graduate as per the university regulations and the directions of government. Students choose the subject with their own interest and they are benefitted by the basic knowledge of different disciplines in their study and research in Folklore.

The Department is known for producing great scholars and teachers. Prof. Somashekhar Imrapur, a noted folklorist, was the founder Chairperson of the Department. Our research scholar Dr. Anandappa B.H. is well known Folk artist.

The Department has developed a museum, with an intention to make it a model Museum in Folklore in North Karnataka. It has collected more than 1700 rare artifacts and planned for digitizationof documents and conservation work.

The Department has a unique reference library. Some scholars have donated valuable books to the Departmental library and thus it has become a very good source to the scholars as well as teachers and students.

The students strength of the Department has been improved as more students are attracted towards folklore studies.
