ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Criminology and Forensic Science was established in 1969 as a comprehensive facility of professional education, training, research, and consultancy etc., to empower the graduates of science, social science and law to employ them in the Dept of law and order, safety, security, vigilance, investigation, espionage, and teaching profession both at State and National level. This course was started under the dynamic leadership of Sri. K.P. Venkatesh Murthy, IPS, the then Superintendent of Police, followed by the then Mr Hosalli IPS and the then Vice-Chancellor Dr Pavate.

Over the last 44 years, the Department has been providing professional training in Police science, Investigation, Forensic Science, Criminal Justice Systems, Correctional Administration, Social Work, Law, Judicial, Victimology, Private Detectives and Private Security who would be engaged in human service for the betterment of the society. With a modest beginning in 1969, the Department has grown in shape, size, and acquired recognition as a centre of Criminology and Forensic Science teachings, professions, research of social problems, and developments.

The Department has a well-established Criminology Museum and Forensic Laboratory. The Department has also been offering the PhD and M. Phil since 1985 and 1994, respectively. The major thrust areas of research are related to Police, Prison, Correctional, Judicial, Road Accidents, Cyber Crimes, Security, Investigation, Insurance fraud and child labour etc.
