ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

 

The Department of Studies in Statistics was founded in 1951 with the view of providing professionally competent academicians for Teaching, Research and training in application of Statistics. Under the abled leadership of Prof. R. D. Narain, Prof. N. U. Prabhu, Prof. B. D. Tikkiwal, Prof. M. V. Jambunathan, Prof. B. R. Bhat and Prof. S. R. Kulkarni, the department has developed into one of the major teaching – learning and research center as is evidenced by its International reputation.  Owing to the services of eminent teachers and researchers like Prof. T. S. Murthy, Prof. M. Sivamurthy, Prof. J. N. Bagali, Prof N. V. Kulkarni and many others, reputation of the department has raised to its new heights. Due to the dedicated efforts of Prof. M. S. Chikkagoudar, Prof. B. N. Nagnur, Prof. M. V. Muddapur, Prof. S. H. Kunchur, Prof. I. D. Shetty and Prof. A. S. Kadi,  the department was recognized by UGC through DRS – SAP during the years 1992 – 2002.  Further the department has been supported by DST through its FIST Programme from 2004 – 2009.  Again, because of present faculty members commitment to research; UGC has sanctioned UGC – DRS – SAP – I and BSR grants during 2012-17 for development of infrastructure.  With these funds, the department has computer laboratory and maintains an excellent Library with recent books on Statistical Inference, Stochastic Modeling and their applications in related fields.  The department faculty members are specialized in one or more areas of Statistics and the department is known for its academic activities in Statistical Inference, Stochastic Modelling, Epidemiology, Reliability Theory, etc. 

Many of our Alumni are working across the globe and were/are distinguished academicians and administrators. To name some organizations / Institutions, University of Manitoba, Old Dominian University Verginia, University of Manchester U. K., Binghamton University, New York, University of Pitsburg, Pennsylvania. Some of our alumni are also functioning as Analysts and Team leaders in Academic and Research institutes, Multinational Companies like GE Services, SKF, Thompson, Mcmillan, Philips, TCS and Government Departments such as Forest, Revenue, Official Statistics, Civil Services, PWD, NSS, NSSO and BSNL. Prof. U. N. Bhat, Prof. I. V. Basawa, Prof. D. N. Shanabhag, Prof. D. N. Nayak, Prof. T. Subbarao, Prof. R. N. Rattihalli, Prof. H. J. Vaman, Prof. S. S. Halli, Prof. S. R. Agnihotri,  Prof. G. G. Hegde and many others are distinguished alumni of the department who have contributed to the knowledge of statistics.
