ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Post-Graduate Department of studies in Geology was established on 4^thFebruary 1954, with Dr.R.V. Joshi as its first Head of the Department, with a mission of offer Postgraduate degree in Geology and through research, bring to light the mineral and metal resources embedded in the crust and to trace the evolution of the geological foundation of the Peninsular shield. Dharwad is not only known as the seat of Karnatak University, but is also known the world over by the distinctive group of rocks noticed by pioneer geologists who designated them as Dharwad Formations. The pioneer geologists who prepared the basic geological map of the region brought to light the valuable mineral and metal resources hidden in a variety of host rocks paving the way for planned exploration and study. This provided a clear vision to the Department. The old guards of the Department paid particular attention to the systematic exploration of mineral and metal resources. Contributions to the study of Precambrians of Karnataka since its early days has laid a solid foundation to promoting earth science education at Karnatak University.
